Whisky from lost distilleries

A lost distillery is one that has closed, been demolished or been mothballed. This page lists whisky from those sites that UK retailers have in stock, with prices. For a distillery that has since reopened, such as Port Ellen or Rosebank, only spirit made before it reopened counts. The Lost Distillery Company is something else: its blends recreate lost styles using whisky from working distilleries.

Lost names that still reach the shelf include St Magdalene in Linlithgow (closed 1983), Littlemill in Bowling (founded 1772, closed for good in 1994), Convalmore in Dufftown (closed 1985), Caperdonich in Rothes (mothballed 2002, demolished 2011) and, outside Scotland, Karuizawa in Japan. No more can be made, so the supply only shrinks.

Below the list are a map of the lost sites, the record of what has been on sale and the 1983 DCL closures. Prices are the best current in-stock offer from the UK retailers we check.

36 bottles from 166 closed distilleries in stock, with the best current price from the UK retailers we check.

For the history of each site, see Whiskipedia on lost distilleries.

Closed but still on the shelf

Whisky from 11 lost distilleries was on sale at the UK retailers we check between 28 September 2026 and 29 October 2026. Shelf prices before delivery; for revived distilleries, only stock made before they reopened. This shows what was on sale, not what a bottle is worth.

The 1983 DCL closures

In 1983 the Distillers Company (DCL, now Diageo) closed eleven malt distilleries, a grain distillery and three supporting plants in one announcement. Four of the malt distilleries have since reopened. The story is on Whiskipedia: Lost Diageo 11; here is where each site stands and whether its whisky is on sale.

Lost and since revived

These closed and have since reopened, so new releases and old stock both carry the name.

Questions

What are some of the lost distilleries in Scotland?
St Magdalene in Linlithgow closed in 1983 and was later converted to flats. Glen Albyn and Glen Mhor, neighbours in Inverness, both closed in 1983 and were later demolished. Littlemill at Bowling, recorded from 1772, closed in 1984, briefly reopened and closed for good in 1994, and the site was cleared for housing in 2004. Dallas Dhu near Forres closed in 1983 and is kept as a museum by Historic Environment Scotland. Whiskipedia on lost distilleries covers each site.
Why did so many Scotch distilleries close in the 1980s?
Over-supply. Stocks of maturing whisky had outrun demand, a surplus known as the whisky loch, and owners cut capacity between 1983 and 1986. In one 1983 announcement DCL, now Diageo, closed 11 malt distilleries, including Brora, Port Ellen and St Magdalene; four of them (Benromach, Knockdhu, Brora and Port Ellen) have since reopened. Rosebank closed later, in 1993. Whiskipedia on the lost Diageo 11.
Is The Lost Distillery Company whisky from closed distilleries?
No. The Lost Distillery Company makes blended malts that aim to recreate the style of long-closed distilleries such as Jericho and Lossit, using whisky from working distilleries. None of the liquid comes from the closed sites themselves. The name refers to the inspiration, not the origin of the spirit.
Why is whisky from closed distilleries so expensive?
Supply is fixed. No new spirit can be made, and every bottle opened or sold shrinks what is left. Much of what survives was distilled decades ago, so it also carries the costs of long storage and evaporation, which why old whisky is expensive sets out. Collector demand for names like Port Ellen and Brora does the rest.
Are Port Ellen and Brora still closed?
No. Brora reopened in 2021, Rosebank in 2023 and Port Ellen in 2024, so new spirit is being made under all three names. Bottles distilled before the closures (1983 for Brora and Port Ellen, 1993 for Rosebank) remain closed-distillery stock, and it is those older bottles that the “lost distillery” label really fits.
