Blended whisky

A blended Scotch whisky combines one or more single malts with one or more single grain whiskies, usually from several distilleries. This page compares UK prices on the blends we track, from everyday Scotch (Johnnie Walker Red Label, Chivas Regal 12, Whyte & Mackay) to Irish whiskeys (Tullamore D.E.W.) and Japanese blends from Nikka.

Blended is a way of making whisky, not a grade: aged and premium blends sit alongside the everyday bottles. A blended malt is a different category, containing single malts only. Some blend tags here come from the brand’s usual style rather than the label, so treat them as a guide. Prices for the same blend tend to vary more between shops than single malts do, so comparison pays.

What is blended Scotch whisky?
Blended Scotch Whisky is a blend of one or more single malt Scotch whiskies with one or more single grain Scotch whiskies. “Blended Scotch Whisky” is one of five legal categories, and the category name must appear on the label.
How much grain whisky is in a blended whisky?
Producers don’t disclose the ratio. Whiskipedia estimates that cheaper blends are 80% or more grain whisky, and that even better blends are usually more than half grain. The column-distilled grain gives volume and lightness, while the pot-distilled malts give most of the aroma and texture.
Can a whisky label list the ages of every whisky inside?
Not in the UK. Under the spirit drinks rules applied by the Scotch Whisky Regulations, an age may only be given where it refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle. The blender Compass Box ran into this rule when it published the ages of the components in one of its blends.
What is the difference between blended and blended malt?
Blended Scotch contains grain whisky as well as malt whisky, while a blended malt is made only from single malts, from more than one distillery. Both categories are defined in the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009. Monkey Shoulder, for example, is a blended malt, not a blend; see blended malt.
