Blended malt whisky

A blended malt is a mix of single malt whiskies from two or more distilleries, with no grain whisky: under the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 that is the legal category, once sold as vatted malt or pure malt. It differs from a single malt, which comes from one distillery, and from a blended whisky, which includes grain whisky.

The bottles below include Monkey Shoulder, Compass Box and Douglas Laing’s regional malts such as Timorous Beastie, Scallywag and The Gauldrons, plus Japanese pure malts, which follow Japanese rather than Scotch rules. We list a bottle here when its label says blended malt or pure malt.

A Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is a blend of two or more single malt Scotch whiskies from more than one distillery. Unlike blended Scotch, it contains no grain whisky.
What is the difference between blended malt, vatted malt and pure malt?
They describe the same thing: malt whiskies from more than one distillery. “Vatted malt” was the old name, replaced by “blended malt” after the row over Cardhu Pure Malt, and the Scotch Whisky Regulations now ban the phrase “pure malt” on Scotch.
What is a teaspooned whisky?
A cask of single malt with a tiny amount of malt from another distillery added, so that it becomes a blended malt and can’t be sold under the original distillery’s name. Distilleries do this to protect their brand when they sell casks to brokers and independent bottlers. Well-known examples are Burnside (Balvenie with a little Glenfiddich) and Westport (Glenmorangie with a little Glen Moray).
Is blended malt the same as single malt?
No. A single malt comes from one distillery; a blended malt marries single malts from two or more distilleries. Neither contains grain whisky, which is what separates both from an ordinary blended Scotch (Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009). See Whiskipedia on vatted versus blended.
Is Monkey Shoulder a blended malt?
Yes. The label says blended malt Scotch whisky: single malts from more than one distillery, married with no grain whisky. The same style is sold by Compass Box, Douglas Laing and others, sometimes under the older names vatted malt or pure malt.
