Single grain whisky

A single grain whisky comes from one distillery but, unlike a single malt, may use cereals other than malted barley, usually wheat or maize, and is usually made in a column still. “Single” refers to the distillery, not the grain: under the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 it is one-distillery Scotch that is neither a single malt nor a blend.

Most grain whisky goes into blended Scotch, and bottles sold on their own are a small niche: Nikka Coffey Grain from Japan, and old single grains from Invergordon, Strathclyde and Cambus, often bottled by independents. Few are stocked by the shops we check, so this page is shorter than most; grain from closed distilleries also appears on our closed-distillery page.

What is single grain Scotch whisky?
A Scotch whisky distilled at a single distillery that is not a single malt. It may be made from malted barley together with other malted or unmalted cereals, such as wheat or maize, and is almost always distilled in continuous column stills.
Does single grain mean the whisky is made from one type of grain?
No. As with single malt, “single” means one distillery. A single grain can mix cereals, and grain whiskies often contain malted barley alongside wheat or maize.
Can a whisky made only from malted barley be a single grain?
Yes. Single malt Scotch must be distilled in pot stills, so a 100% malted barley spirit made in a column still falls outside the single malt category and is classed as grain whisky.
What is a Coffey still?
A column still that distils continuously rather than in batches, patented by Aeneas Coffey in 1830. It is also called a patent, column or continuous still. It strips out more of the grain’s oils and flavour than a pot still, giving the lighter spirit used for grain whisky.
