Non-chill-filtered whisky

Compare UK prices on whiskies identified in our catalogue as non-chill-filtered. Chill filtration removes compounds that can make whisky cloudy when cold or diluted; the haze is harmless. Non-chill-filtered whisky may still be filtered in other ways. Find out more in our guide to chill filtration.

Our information comes from bottle or retailer descriptions and published producer or bottler policies. Where a matching German retailer describes a release, we generally treat the corresponding UK release as the same product unless evidence suggests otherwise; that is an inference, not a guarantee for every market or batch. A bottle-specific statement that it is chill-filtered overrides a general policy. We do not infer filtration from alcohol strength alone. Check the particular bottle if this matters to you.

A whisky absent from this collection is not necessarily chill-filtered: its process may simply be unknown. How we compare prices.

How much does non-chill-filtered whisky cost?

What is the oldest non-chill-filtered whisky you can buy?
What is chill filtration?
Before bottling, the whisky is cooled to around 0°C and pumped through a fine filter, which removes fatty acids, proteins and esters that can cloud it. The Irish whiskey rules allow it only to prevent haze, not to remove colour, flavour or aroma.
Why is whisky chill-filtered?
For appearance. Without it, whisky can turn hazy when it is cold or when water or ice is added, which shoppers may mistake for a fault. The haze mainly appears below about 46% ABV, which is why many non-chill-filtered whiskies are bottled at 46% or stronger.
Does chill filtration change the taste?
Barely, according to blind tastings. In a 2014 tasting run by Horst Lüning, even experts could hardly tell chill-filtered and non-chill-filtered whiskies apart, though removing the oils can make the mouthfeel thinner.
Is cloudy whisky safe to drink?
Yes. The haze is made of fatty acids, esters and other compounds from distillation and the cask that come out of solution when it is cold. It is harmless.
