Cask finish whisky

A cask-finished whisky spends most of its maturation in one cask, then a final period in a second, often a sherry, port, wine or rum cask; labels rarely say how long. Bottles here include finishes from Jura, Aberlour, Ledaig and Angel’s Envy, and the main types have their own pages: sherry, port and wine. We tag from the name or description, so a finished whisky that does not say so may be missing. Prices are the best current in-stock offer from the UK retailers we check.

What is a cask finish?
A finish is an additional period of maturation in a different cask after primary ageing. For example, a single malt might mature for 12 years in ex-bourbon barrels before spending an extra period in a cask that held Sherry or Port. Finishes typically last from a few months to a few years, and the label may name the finishing wood.
Why do distillers finish whisky?
To add complexity and new flavours from the finishing cask’s previous contents, and sometimes to rescue or refine casks that have not matured as expected. Finishing became widespread only in the last few decades, with well-known examples including Glenmorangie’s Madeira finish and The Balvenie Port Wood.
How is the age worked out for a finished or multi-cask whisky?
The age statement covers the whole maturation, including any time in a finishing cask, and must be that of the youngest whisky in the bottle. Under the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 any age or maturation period on a Scotch label must be stated in years.
How long is a whisky cask finish?
There is no fixed length: the producer decides, and labels often do not say how long the second cask held the whisky. Some finishes last a few months, others run to years: Balvenie DoubleWood 12, for example, spends about nine months in oloroso sherry casks after its ex-bourbon maturation.
