Port cask whisky

Port cask whisky has spent time, usually a finish at the end of maturation, in casks that previously held port. This page compares UK prices on bottles whose label or description names a port cask, such as GlenDronach Port Wood, Arran Port Wood, Dalmore Port Wood Reserve, Tomatin 14, Balvenie 21 PortWood and the port-finished bourbon Angel’s Envy.

Most port cask whiskies are finishes rather than full maturations. Do not confuse the cask with the names: Port Askaig, Port Charlotte and Port Ellen are brands or distilleries, not cask types. For other wine-based casks, see sherry cask and wine cask whisky.

For how casks shape whisky, see Whiskipedia on wood types.

That is £31.85 delivered to the UK mainland for one bottle. Next cheapest: The One Colheita Cask Finish (£34.20) and Glencadam Reserva De Porto Branco White Port Cask Highland S Whisky (£39.95).
How much does port cask whisky cost?

What is the oldest port cask whisky you can buy?
How big is a port pipe?
A port pipe (from the Portuguese “pipa”) is typically about 550 to 650 litres, so it is longer and larger than a sherry butt. The pipe is also the Douro’s traditional unit of volume, 550 litres, which the IVDP uses when it sets each year’s port production.
What does a port cask do to whisky?
Port casks typically add fruity berry flavours, such as red berries and plums, with a little sweetness and peppery oak, and can give the whisky a richer colour. They are often used to finish whisky that has already matured in other casks; The Balvenie Port Wood is a well-known example.
What is the difference between port and sherry casks?
Both held fortified wine: sherry comes from Jerez in Spain, port from the Douro valley in Portugal, and both are common for finishing whisky. As a broad tendency, sherry casks lean towards dried fruit and spice and port casks towards red fruit, but the wine, the cask’s history and the finishing time matter more than the category. See sherry cask whisky.
Is Angel's Envy a port cask bourbon?
Yes. Angel’s Envy is a Kentucky bourbon finished in port barrels, as its label states. The idea is the same as with Scotch: time in a cask that held port after the main maturation. See bourbon whisky.
