25 year old whisky

A 25 year old whisky has no whisky younger than 25 years in the bottle: the age statement is the youngest component. This page compares UK prices on the 25-year-olds we track, official and independent bottlings alike, from Bowmore 25 and The Glenlivet 25 to Benriach The Twenty Five and Chivas Regal 25.

Age is not a guarantee of quality; the distillery and the cask matter as much as the years. At this level the same bottle can differ by a three-figure sum between shops. For what the years in cask do, see Whiskipedia on whisky maturation.

What does 25 year old mean on whisky?
It means the youngest whisky in the bottle spent at least 25 years in cask. Older whisky may be in the mix, but the age refers to the youngest component: under the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009, a label may state only that age.
Is 25 year old whisky always better than younger whisky?
Not automatically. An age statement records time in cask, not quality. The distillery and the casks shape the whisky as much as the years do, which is why 25-year-olds from different distilleries and cask types taste so different.
