One of the largest spirits markets in the world, India is also one of the largest whisky producers in the world. Though most of this couldn’t be sold here as it is molasses based and has more in common with Rum. Happily there are now three Indian whisky distilleries producing single malts. Amrut, Paul John and the newer Rampur.
Arguably the most important whisky distillery in India is the Amrut distillery in Bangalore in the north of the country. Their Amrut Fusion was named the third best whisky in the world by Jim Murray in his 2010 Whisky Bible reaching 97 out of 100 points and putting Indian whisky on the map. Sadly later editions have attracted less favourable reviews. Paul John of Goa has also proved wildly popular, in particular for their single casks and special releases. Rampur so far has been solid, if as yet unexceptional.
Like Taiwan, India’s angels share often reaches into double digits meaning far faster Maturation than in the UK. Keep an eye out for single cask but don’t doubt the budget entries. Happily due to either ignorance or the power of western marketing Indians don’t generally drink their own spirits, the result is better quality whisky for a lower price in the UK.
