When did Denmark start making whisky?
Trials began at the state distillery in Roskilde in 1922, and a first commercial Danish whisky, C.L.O.C., went on sale in 1952 but was dropped in 1974. The modern industry began in 2005, when Bornholm winemaker Jesper Paulsen filled his first cask and the founders of Braunstein and Stauning set up.
Why did Danish whisky take off in the 2000s?
Because tax fell. Denmark gave up its state alcohol monopoly when it joined the EEC in 1973, but taxes stayed high until the Danish parliament halved alcohol duty on 1 October 2003. That made small-scale distilling viable, and many new distilleries followed.
What is Stauning whisky?
Stauning was set up in 2005 by nine friends and relatives near Stauning on Denmark’s west coast, and Whiskipedia describes it as the country’s largest whisky distillery. It malts barley from neighbouring fields itself and heats its stills with an open fire. Diageo’s Distill Ventures took a minority stake in 2015, funding a larger distillery that opened next door at the end of 2018.
Why is some Danish whisky smoked with nettles?
At Fary Lochan, near Billund, the founder dried his malt over nettles instead of peat, borrowing a Danish technique for smoking cheese. The distillery started in 2009, and its seasonal bottlings increase in nettle smoke from spring to winter.
