What is Kyrö?
Kyrö is a Finnish rye distillery in an old dairy in Isokyrö, western Finland. Its founders came up with the idea in a sauna in 2012, while drinking an American rye and noticing that nobody in Finland made rye whisky. Its first distillation was in 2014, and the spirit had to age at least three years before it could be sold as whisky.
When did Finland start making malt whisky?
Teerenpeli, in Lahti, opened its distillery in 2002 and is one of the pioneers of Finnish malt whisky. In 2015 it released what was described as Finland’s first 10-year-old single malt, made from local barley malted by Viking Malt in Lahti and lightly smoked with Finnish peat.
Why do Finnish distillers use rye?
Rye is a cornerstone of Finnish cuisine, with Finns eating about six times the global average, and Kyrö was founded as an all-rye distillery, making rye whisky and rye gin. Teerenpeli, by contrast, makes single malt from local barley, so Finnish whisky covers both styles.
