About this data: method, downloads and sources

How we did it

Which bottles. Every confirmed bottle in stock at two or more independent retailers on 14 October 2026: 186 bottles. Only listings confirmed as the same bottle are compared, so a gap is never between two different products. Bottles of any size count, since each comparison is between listings of the same bottle.

One owner, one retailer. Loch Fyne Whiskies and The Whisky Shop have the same owner, so we treat them as one retailer and use the lower of their two prices. The other retailers are DrinkSupermarket.com, Hard To Find Whisky and Tyndrum Whisky: four owners in all.

The gap. For each bottle, the dearest retailer’s shelf price minus the lowest, as a percentage of the lowest. We report the median and the 90th percentile (nearest rank, so each figure is a gap we actually saw). The delivered gap repeats this with the price of one bottle delivered to a UK mainland address by each retailer’s standard service (3 bottles lack a delivered price at one retailer and are left out of that figure).

Lowest and highest. For each retailer, the share of the shared bottles it stocks on which its shelf price was the lowest, and the highest. Ties count for every retailer at the tied price, and a bottle priced the same everywhere counts as neither. A retailer that stocks fewer shared bottles has a smaller base, shown in the table.

Coverage. One collection day, 5 retailers. We do not yet check supermarkets, Master of Malt or The Whisky Exchange, so gaps across the whole UK market may be wider. Prices change daily.
