Jack Daniel's whisky

Jack Daniel’s is a Tennessee whiskey distilled in Lynchburg, Tennessee. The distillery was registered in 1866, which the producer says makes it the oldest registered distillery in the United States, and names Jasper Newton “Jack” Daniel as founder and Nathan “Nearest” Green as its first master distiller.

While it qualifies technically as a straight bourbon, the distillery identifies its spirit as Tennessee whiskey because every drop is charcoal mellowed through sugar maple before entering new charred American white oak barrels, a step the producer calls the Lincoln County Process.

The Jack Daniel’s range explained

The Lynchburg distillery produces several distinct styles of whiskey, spanning different mash bills, filtration treatments, proofs, and warehouse selections:

1. Old No. 7 (The Black Label)

The flagship expression of the distillery, made from a mash bill of 80% corn, 12% malted barley, and 8% rye. After sugar maple charcoal mellowing, it matures in new oak barrels until the producer’s tasters deem it ready. Bottled at 40% ABV; the producer’s tasting notes cite sweet vanilla, caramel, toasted banana and gentle oak. It is sold in 70cl bottles as well as 35cl half-bottles, 1-litre formats and larger sizes.

2. Gentleman Jack

Introduced in 1988, Gentleman Jack is distinguished by double charcoal mellowing. The spirit is filtered through sugar maple charcoal before entering the barrel, and then filtered a second time after maturation. Bottled at 40% ABV; the producer says this second pass gives a softer profile with honey, vanilla and apple notes.

3. The Bottled in Bond Series

Crafted according to the strict standards of the historic 1897 Bottled-in-Bond Act, these expressions come from a single distillation season by one distiller, mature for at least four years in federally bonded warehouses, and are bottled at exactly 50% ABV (100 proof):

  • Jack Daniel’s Bonded: Selected from specific barrels; the producer cites deeper oak, warm baking spice, caramel and smoke.
  • Jack Daniel’s Bonded Rye: Made with a 70% rye grain bill, described by the producer as bold rye pepper, menthol and dried fruit at 100 proof.
  • Jack Daniel’s Triple Mash: A blended straight whiskey combining 60% Bonded Rye, 20% Bonded Tennessee Whiskey, and 20% Bonded American Single Malt; the producer cites layers of dried fruit, grain and toasted wood.

4. The Single Barrel Collection

Bottled from individual barrels located on the top tiers of the Lynchburg barrelhouses, where the producer says wider temperature swings increase interaction between spirit and wood:

  • Single Barrel Select: Hand-selected barrels bottled at 45% ABV (90 proof); the producer cites toasted oak, dark caramel and ripe plum, with variation from barrel to barrel.
  • Single Barrel Rye: 70% rye mash bill aged in individual barrels, described by the producer as herbal spice and toasted oak.
  • Single Barrel Barrel Proof: Bottled without dilution at natural barrel strength (typically 60% to 66% ABV, 120 to 132 proof); the producer cites intense vanilla, dark chocolate and concentrated oak spice.

5. Tennessee Rye

Marking the distillery’s first new grain recipe in over a century, Tennessee Rye uses 70% rye, 18% corn, and 12% malted barley. Charcoal mellowed like the flagship; the producer describes spicy pepper and crisp orchard fruit balanced by the house character.

6. Special & Heritage Editions

  • Sinatra Select: Created to honour Frank Sinatra’s lifelong affinity for Old No. 7. It matures in handcrafted “Sinatra barrels” with deep horizontal grooves cut into the interior staves to expose more toasted oak layers, bottled at 45% ABV.
  • Age-Stated Releases (10 Year Old & 12 Year Old): Annual batch releases from extended maturation in Lynchburg warehouses, the distillery’s first age-stated whiskies in over 25 years.
  • No. 27 Gold: Twice charcoal mellowed and double-barrelled, with a finishing period in maple wood barrels.

Note on flavoured products: Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey, Tennessee Apple, and Tennessee Fire are flavoured spirit drinks blended with whiskey; they do not meet the legal definition of whiskey and are not compared here. Unrelated independent releases finished in Jack Daniel’s casks (such as Penderyn cask finishes) are catalogued under their respective producers.

Questions

What is the cheapest Jack Daniel's whisky?
The cheapest Jack Daniel’s whisky is Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Apple Whiskey Liqueur (35% ABV, 70cl), at £26.00 from The Whisky Shop. That is £30.99 delivered to the UK mainland for one bottle. Next cheapest: Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire Whiskey Liqueur (£27.50) and Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Travelers - Bold & Spicy Tennessee Whiskey 50cl (£33.50).
How much does Jack Daniel's whisky cost?
Jack Daniel’s whisky costs from £26.00 to £199.95, with a median of £50.00 for a full-size bottle. The dearest is Jack Daniel’s 10 Year Old.
What is the oldest Jack Daniel's whisky you can buy?
Who makes Tennessee whiskey?
The best-known makers are Jack Daniel’s and George Dickel, whose Cascade Hollow distillery near Tullahoma uses a mash of 84% corn, 8% rye and 8% malted barley. Dickel spells it “whisky”, without the e, reputedly because George Dickel believed his whisky could rival Scotch.
What is the Lincoln County Process?
The Lincoln County Process is a method of charcoal mellowing that defines Tennessee whiskey. Before entering new charred oak barrels for maturation, the freshly distilled spirit is filtered through sugar maple charcoal, a step the producer credits with mellowing the spirit.
Is Jack Daniel's a bourbon or a Tennessee whiskey?
Jack Daniel’s meets all legal requirements to be classified as straight bourbon under US federal law, but identifies as Tennessee whiskey due to its state of origin and charcoal mellowing. Under the North American Free Trade Agreement and Tennessee state law, Tennessee whiskey must be straight bourbon produced in Tennessee and charcoal filtered.
What is the difference between Old No. 7 and Gentleman Jack?
Gentleman Jack undergoes double charcoal mellowing, passing through sugar maple charcoal before barrel entry and once again after maturation before bottling. Old No. 7 is charcoal mellowed only once, prior to barrel ageing.
What makes Jack Daniel's Single Barrel different?
Single Barrel releases are drawn from individual barrels rather than being vatted together, so the producer says bottles can vary from one barrel to the next in aroma, colour and taste.
