Indian single malt UK prices: Amrut and more

Indian single malts from Paul John, Indri, Amrut and Rampur at UK retailers, with the lowest current price and delivery for each bottle we track.

The Indian single malts on sale at the UK retailers we check come from four distilleries: Paul John, Indri, Amrut and Rampur. Core bottles run from Paul John Bold at £42.50 at Master of Malt and Indri Trini at £39.95 at Hard To Find Whisky up to Paul John Kanya at £190.50 at Master of Malt.

These are bottles tagged as Indian single malt in our catalogue and in stock when we last collected prices, not a ranking of the best Indian whisky. We have not tasted them for this guide. We give label facts, the producer and the live price, and we say when only one shop sells a bottle.

Indian single malt and Indian ‘whisky’

Single malt means whisky from malted barley, distilled at one distillery. Much of the whisky sold within India is a different product, historically made with molasses-based spirit, and it is not exported as whisky. The bottles below are all malt whisky. Paul John Bold: £42.50 at Master of Malt. A 70cl single malt at 46% ABV. Paul John Brilliance at £42.50 at Master of Malt is another 70cl single malt at the same 46% ABV. Both currently have one stockist each.

Indri Trini Single Malt Indian Whisky: £39.95 at Hard To Find Whisky. A 70cl single malt at 46% ABV matured in three cask types; our tags list bourbon, sherry and wine casks. One retailer currently stocks it.

Amrut Fusion Whisky: £49.95 at Hard To Find Whisky. A 70cl single malt from Amrut Distilleries, founded in 1948 in Karnataka. Two retailers list it, so there is a real comparison. For the distillery’s history, see Amrut on Whiskipedia.

Paul John Classic Select Cask: £64.95 at Hard To Find Whisky. A 70cl single malt at 55.2% ABV, with one stockist. Indri DRU Single Malt Indian Whisky at £68.65 at Master of Malt is a bourbon-cask-tagged bottling at 57.2% ABV sold by four retailers, the widest spread of any bottle on this page.

Rampur Select Casks Whisky: currently unavailable. A 70cl single malt at 43% ABV, with one stockist.

Paul John Oloroso Select Cask at £78.45 at Hard To Find Whisky and Pedro Ximenez Select Cask at £79.95 at Hard To Find Whisky are 48% ABV sherry-cask releases, each at two retailers. Paul John 2017 Ex-Bourbon Milroy’s Exclusive #4127 at currently unavailable is a single-cask ex-bourbon release at 58.2% ABV bottled for Milroy’s of Soho. Paul John Kanya at £190.50 at Master of Malt (50% ABV, three retailers) is the top of the range we price.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company Paul John 6 Year Old Batch 6: £105.00 at The Whisky Shop. A 50cl independent bottling at 47.6% ABV, the only independent release in this set, stocked by two retailers.

Two gaps are worth stating. Names you may see recommended elsewhere, such as Godawan, are not tracked in our catalogue at all. And beyond Fusion, Amrut is thin here: the Amrut Madeira cask release we track had no current price when we last collected.

Warm-climate maturation

Indian single malts are often bottled young because heat speeds the interaction between spirit and cask and increases evaporation. The rate varies by site, so we do not quote a single figure; Whiskipedia explains the angels’ share. Treat age comparisons with Scotch with care.

Questions

Why is Indian whisky often young?
India’s heat speeds up the interaction between spirit and cask and increases evaporation, so producers bottle younger than Scottish distilleries typically do. Evaporation rates vary by distillery and warehouse, so no single figure applies, and an Indian age statement is not directly comparable with a Scottish one. Whiskipedia explains the angels’ share.
Is Indian whisky made from molasses?
Some is. Much of the whisky made for the Indian domestic market has historically used molasses-based spirit, which is one reason it is not sold as whisky here. The Indian single malts exported to the UK, from producers such as Amrut, Paul John and Indri, are made from malted barley. Whiskipedia’s report on Indian whisky imports has the background.
What does single malt mean for Indian whisky?
The same as it does for Scotch: whisky distilled from malted barley at a single distillery. Amrut Fusion, Paul John Brilliance and Indri Trini all meet that definition. What differs is maturation, because India’s climate speeds cask interaction, so Indian single malts are usually bottled younger than Scotch.
