The best single malt whisky under £50
Single malts under £50 grouped by style, from bourbon-cask Arran and Glenlivet to sherried Aberlour and Tamdhu and peated Talisker and Ledaig.

For a single malt under £50, start with Arran Barrel Reserve for bourbon-cask maturation, Aberlour 12 Year Old or Tamdhu 12 Year Old for sherry casks, and Talisker 10 Year Old for peat. Choose by style rather than a single ranking: cask type and peat change a malt far more than a few pounds in price.
For the broader choice, compare single malt whisky or the £30–£50 price band.

Light and fruity
These are unpeated malts, matured mainly in ex-bourbon American oak, which tends to give vanilla, citrus and orchard fruit rather than dried fruit or smoke. Whiskipedia explains bourbon casks.
Arran Barrel Reserve: £35.00 at The Whisky Shop. A 70cl single malt from Lochranza on the Isle of Arran, matured in bourbon casks and bottled at 43% ABV with no age statement (NAS), rather than the standard 40% minimum.
anCnoc 12 Year Old: £34.90 at Master of Malt. A 12-year-old Highland single malt at 40% ABV from Knockdhu distillery in Aberdeenshire. The standard anCnoc range is unpeated; the distillery sells its peated whisky as separate bottlings.
The Glenlivet 12 Year Old: £34.95 at Hard To Find Whisky. A 12-year-old unpeated Speyside single malt at 40% ABV. George Smith licensed Glenlivet in 1824, soon after the Excise Act of 1823 made legal distilling practical, and its 12-year-old is one of the reference points for light Speyside malt. Compare pricesSherry cask
Sherry casks tend to add dried fruit, nuts and spice, but “sherry cask” on a label can mean full maturation, a finish or one part of a mix of casks. The three below cover all three cases. Our sherry-cask selection has more.
Jura 12 Year Old: £33.50 at Master of Malt. A 12-year-old single malt from the Isle of Jura at 40% ABV. It is matured in ex-bourbon American oak and finished in oloroso sherry casks, so the sherry is a final layer rather than the whole story. Whiskipedia on oloroso casks.
Aberlour 12 Year Old: £45.00 at The Whisky Shop. A 12-year-old unpeated Speyside single malt at 40% ABV. Aberlour sells it as double cask matured: whisky from traditional oak casks and from sherry casks, combined before bottling.
Tamdhu 12 Year Old Sherry Cask Matured Single Malt Whisky: £49.95 at Hard To Find Whisky. A 12-year-old Speyside single malt at 43% ABV, matured entirely in sherry-seasoned oak casks. It is the most sherry-led of the three, bottled at 43% ABV. Whiskipedia on Tamdhu.

Compare pricesSmoky
Age and peat are separate choices: a 10- or 12-year statement tells you about maturation time, not how smoky the whisky is. Peat levels are usually quoted as ppm phenols in the malt before distilling (Whiskipedia on phenols). The peated whisky list has more.
Ledaig 10 Year Old: £39.50 at Master of Malt. A 10-year-old single malt from Tobermory distillery on Mull, bottled at 46.3% ABV. Ledaig is Tobermory’s peated single malt brand (derived from catalogue data at 30 to 40 ppm). Mull is legally part of the Highland region, although shops often group island distilleries separately.
Talisker 10 Year Old: £39.15 at Master of Malt. A 10-year-old single malt from the Isle of Skye at 45.8% ABV. Talisker’s peated character comes from its distillery house style: its malt is commonly cited at about 18 to 25 ppm. Whiskipedia on Talisker.

Single malt is not exclusive to Scotland. Each country has its own rules and label terms, so treat these as their own styles rather than Scotch by another name.
Connemara Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey: £33.45 at Master of Malt. A 70cl NAS Irish single malt at 40% ABV from Cooley distillery in County Louth. It is made from peated malt and double distilled, both unusual in Irish whiskey, where unpeated and triple-distilled spirit is the norm.
What the label tells you
Start with the age, the strength and the cask. An age statement is the youngest whisky in the bottle, not the average (Whiskipedia on age statements). Strength is a factual label specification: most malts here are 40% ABV, while Ledaig (46.3%), Talisker (45.8%), Cotswolds (46%), Arran Barrel Reserve (43%) and Tamdhu (43%) are bottled at higher strengths, leaving room for a splash of water if preferred. Cask wording tells you whether sherry or bourbon oak shaped the whole maturation or only the last months.
