Whisky gifts for Christmas 2026 by budget

Whisky gift ideas under £30, £50, £100 and above: blends, bourbon, age-stated single malts, Irish pot still and Japanese whisky, plus gift tins and sets.

For a gift that suits most whisky drinkers, start with a 12-year-old Speyside single malt: Glenfiddich 12 Year Old at £36.96 at Master of Malt or Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood at £50.28 at Master of Malt. Both are unpeated, 40% ABV and clearly age-stated. Under £30, Old Pulteney Harbour at £31.95 at Hard To Find Whisky is a Highland single malt from Wick. The lists below are grouped by budget, with a spread of styles in each.

The chart below shows how many whiskies in stock at the UK retailers we check fall into each budget, on shelf price and once delivery is added. What a whisky gift budget buys explains the method.

Under £30

This band includes blended Scotch, Irish whiskey, bourbon and single malt. The full under-£30 list excludes miniatures and other small formats.

Robert Burns Blend: £26.95 at Master of Malt. A 70cl blended Scotch at 40% ABV from Isle of Arran Distillers, a natural choice for Burns Night on 25 January as well as Christmas.

Slane Irish Whiskey: £24.60 at Tyndrum Whisky. A 70cl blended Irish whiskey at 40% ABV from Slane Castle in County Meath, matured in three cask types including oloroso sherry casks.

£30 to £50

There is more choice of age-stated single malt here, alongside Irish whiskey. Compare the full £30–£50 selection if none of these fits.

Glenfiddich 12 Year Old: £36.96 at Master of Malt. A 12-year-old unpeated Speyside single malt at 40% ABV from Dufftown, matured in American and European oak. It is one of the most recognised single malts, which makes it a safe gift.

Arran Barrel Reserve: £35.00 at The Whisky Shop. A 70cl NAS single malt at 43% ABV from Lochranza on the Isle of Arran, matured in bourbon casks.

Jura 12 Year Old: £33.50 at Master of Malt. A 12-year-old single malt from the Isle of Jura at 40% ABV, matured in ex-bourbon casks and finished in oloroso sherry casks.

Jameson Black Barrel: £35.00 at The Whisky Shop. A 70cl blended Irish whiskey at 40% ABV from Midleton, matured partly in double-charred bourbon barrels, for a recipient who already knows the standard Jameson.

£50 to £100

This band covers older age statements, sherry-cask maturation and heavily peated whisky. See the full £50–£100 list for the complete selection.

Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood: £50.28 at Master of Malt. A 12-year-old unpeated Speyside single malt at 40% ABV, matured in American oak whisky casks and then finished in European oak sherry casks.

Stauning Kaos Triple Malt: £66.40 at Tyndrum Whisky. A 70cl Danish whisky at 46% ABV from Stauning in West Jutland, combining three of the distillery’s malt whiskies, for someone whose collection already extends beyond Scotch, Irish and American whiskey.

Ardbeg Corryvreckan: £74.95 at Hard To Find Whisky. A heavily peated NAS Islay single malt at 57.1% ABV, named after the whirlpool between Jura and Scarba. Choose it only for someone who already likes big smoke. Whiskipedia on Ardbeg.

Redbreast 12 Year Old: £51.00 at Master of Malt. A 12-year-old single pot still Irish whiskey at 40% ABV from Midleton, matured in ex-bourbon and oloroso sherry casks, and a step up from the blended Irish whiskey in the lower bands.

£100 and over

At this level the picks are Japanese whisky. The £100–£250 list gives the wider choice.

Nikka Tailored: £105.00 at Tyndrum Whisky. A 70cl Japanese blended whisky at 43% ABV from Nikka, the company behind the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries. Whiskipedia explains the Japanese whisky standard.

Yamazaki 12 Year Old: £120.00 at The Whisky Shop. A 12-year-old Japanese single malt at 43% ABV from Yamazaki, near Kyoto, Japan’s first commercial malt whisky distillery, opened in 1923. Its casks include American oak, sherry and Japanese mizunara oak.

If they like smoke, sherry or bourbon

For smoke, compare peated whisky and the peated whisky under £50 guide; peat levels are usually quoted as ppm phenols in the malt, so check the distillery as well as the region. For sherry casks, the sherry-cask selection includes full maturation and finishes, and Whiskipedia explains what sherry casks are. For American whiskey, start with the bourbon list rather than assuming every US bottle is bourbon.

Choose a whisky gift by what they drink. For adults only: match what the recipient already drinks. For someone new to whisky, or if you don't know their taste, a 12-year-old Speyside single malt is the safest choice: Glenfiddich 12 Year Old or Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood. For a bourbon drinker: Maker's Mark 46 or Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. For someone who likes smoke: Talisker 10 Year Old or Lagavulin 16 Year Old. For sherry and wine-cask fans: Aberlour 12 Year Old or Glenmorangie 14 Year Old The Quinta Ruban. For Irish and Japanese whisky drinkers: Redbreast 12 Year Old or Hibiki Japanese Harmony.

Gift packs and tasting sets

A gift pack usually pairs a standard bottle with presentation packaging, and the whisky inside is normally the same liquid at the same age and strength as the plain bottle. Whisky-only gift packs priced in our catalogue check of 23 to 28 October 2026:

Aberfeldy 12 Year Old Gold Tin: £45.00 at Master of Malt. A 70cl 12-year-old Highland single malt at 40% ABV from Perthshire, in a gift tin.

Glen Scotia 12 Year Old Gift Pack 70cl: £43.95 at Hard To Find Whisky. A 70cl 12-year-old Campbeltown single malt at 46% ABV.

Nc’Nean Organic + Gift Tube 70cl: currently unavailable. A 70cl organic single malt at 46% ABV, in a gift tube.

Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask 2025 Release 70cl: £71.94 at Master of Malt. A 70cl 12-year-old Speyside single malt at 40% ABV.

For multi-bottle tasting sets and 5cl miniatures, see whisky miniatures and samples, which covers the small formats. Gift packaging is not a reliable guide to what is inside, so compare the age, size and cask information with the plain bottle where both are available. All of these are alcoholic gifts for an adult recipient.

Questions

Which whisky makes a good gift?
A 12-year-old Speyside single malt is the safest choice for someone whose taste you don’t know: Glenfiddich 12 Year Old and Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood are unpeated, bottled at 40% ABV and carry a clear age statement. If they already drink smoky whisky, Ardbeg Corryvreckan is a heavily peated Islay malt at 57.1% ABV; if they drink Irish, Redbreast 12 Year Old is single pot still whiskey.
What size is a standard whisky bottle?
In the UK a standard bottle is 70cl. A miniature is 5cl, and 20cl and 35cl bottles are common smaller sizes. A gift pack usually holds one standard 70cl bottle with presentation packaging; multi-bottle tasting sets combine smaller bottles.
Is the whisky in a gift tin different from the plain bottle?
Usually not. A gift tin or box normally holds the same whisky at the same age and strength as the standard bottle; Aberfeldy 12 Year Old Gold Tin is a 12-year-old Highland single malt at 40% ABV, like the plain release.
What is single pot still Irish whiskey?
It is whiskey made at one distillery in pot stills from a mash of malted and unmalted barley, a style unique to Ireland. The unmalted barley gives a thicker, spicier texture. Redbreast 12 Year Old is triple distilled at Midleton in County Cork and matured in ex-bourbon and oloroso sherry casks (Whiskipedia explains triple distillation).
