European whisky: what UK retailers stock

Danish and Finnish rye, French single malt and Welsh whisky made under EU spirit rules, compared by live UK price from the retailers we check.

European whisky produced beyond Scotland and Ireland is a growing category. From Danish rye and French single malts to Welsh pot still spirit, continental distillers work under broad European spirit rules while developing local grain recipes and cask finishes.

This guide looks at the European whiskies available from the UK retailers we check, with live prices and key label facts.

How we chose

These bottles are tagged as world and European whiskies in our catalogue and reflect stock observed during our retailer checks. We do not accept advertising or paid placements, and we have not conducted subjective tastings for this guide. We provide verified label facts, the distillery origin, and live UK pricing.

Continental distilling traditions

While Scotland and Ireland follow centuries of specific statutory definitions, continental European distillers operate under broader European spirit rules while developing local regional styles:

European whiskies to explore

Stauning Rye: A Danish rye whisky distilled from floor-malted rye and barley in direct-fired pot stills, matured in virgin American oak barrels. The distillery describes notes of spicy pepper, toasted rye bread and warm vanilla.

Stauning Smoke Single Malt: Distilled from Danish barley malted over local peat and heather, matured in first-fill bourbon and virgin oak casks; the distillery describes gentle coastal smoke and sweet citrus.

Glann Ar Mor Single Malt: A French single malt from the Celtic Whisky Distillerie in Brittany, matured on the Atlantic coast in ex-bourbon casks without chill filtration or artificial colouring.

Penderyn Madeira Finish: Welsh single malt distilled in a Faraday still and finished in ex-Madeira fortified wine casks, bottled at 46% ABV; the distillery cites dried fruit, sultanas and creamy toffee.

All whisky produced and sold within the European Union must satisfy EU Regulation 2019/787. Under EU law, the spirit must be mashed and fermented with yeast, distilled to less than 94.8% ABV so the distillate retains the aroma and taste of raw materials, and aged for a minimum of three years in wooden casks holding no more than 700 litres. The addition of neutral alcohol, flavouring, or sweetening is strictly prohibited; only plain caramel (E150a) may be used for colour adjustment.

Retailers and check date

Prices and availability are checked across specialist UK retailers including Master of Malt, The Whisky Exchange, and independent wine and spirit merchants. Prices and stock change daily; the retailer’s checkout price is always the final governing amount. Read how we compare prices.
