Japanese whisky UK prices: where the value is

Which Japanese whiskies are fairly priced in the UK, from Nikka to Suntory, with the lowest current price and delivery for each bottle we track.

The value in Japanese whisky is at the blend end: full-size bottles such as Suntory Whisky Toki Black (£36.99 at Master of Malt), Nikka Days (£37.99 at Tyndrum Whisky) and Hatozaki Japanese Blended Whisky (£37.50 at Master of Malt) all sat under £60 at our 14 October 2026 check, while age-stated bottles started far higher. We compared the 24 Japanese bottles then priced at the UK retailers we check.

This guide links to retailers. Some links may earn us a commission; picks are based on the price data and the criteria below.

Why prices range so widely

At our check, the 24 priced Japanese bottles ran from under £40 to nearly £5,000, with a median just under £78. The usual explanation, repeated across the trade press, is that Japanese producers cut output in the 1980s and 1990s when demand at home fell, and that global demand rose sharply after that. Whisky takes years to mature, so aged stock laid down in a quiet decade runs out quickly when demand returns. We have not verified the production figures ourselves, so treat that as the standard account rather than settled fact. The price effect, at least, is visible in our own data: every age-stated Japanese bottle we price sat at £120 or above.

For the history and the distilleries behind the names, see Whiskipedia’s guides to Japanese whisky and Japanese whisky distilleries, and our Japan country page for everything we track.

Under £60

Seven full-size Japanese bottles sat under £60 at our check. The label facts below are from the listings; none of these carries an age statement.

Suntory Whisky Toki Black: £36.99 at Master of Malt. A 70cl blended whisky at 43% ABV from Suntory. A few of the shops we check stock it. The standard Suntory Whisky Toki (£29.50 at Master of Malt) is a separate listing, also currently in stock and in budget, so do not confuse the two.

Nikka Days: £37.99 at Tyndrum Whisky. A 70cl blend at 40% ABV from Nikka, stocked by most of the retailers we check, which gives you a useful spread of offers.

Hatozaki Japanese Blended Whisky: £37.50 at Master of Malt. A 70cl blend at 40% ABV. Several shops stock it, and its sister bottling, Hatozaki Pure Malt (£49.00 at The Whisky Shop), a 70cl at 46% ABV, also sat in budget.

Mars Kasai: £39.95 at Hard To Find Whisky. A 70cl bottling at 40% ABV from Mars. Only a couple of the shops we check stock it, so there is little to compare yet.

The Chita Suntory Whisky: £49.49 at Master of Malt. A 70cl bottling at 43% ABV from Suntory, near the top of this band at our check.

Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky: currently unavailable. A 70cl at 45% ABV from Nikka. Only a couple of the shops we check stock it.

One size caveat: Nikka from the Barrel (£45.00 at The Whisky Shop) is a 50cl bottle at 51.4% ABV, so compare it per litre rather than per bottle against the 70cl options above.

Age-stated Japanese whisky

The lowest-priced age-stated bottle at our check was Yamazaki 12 Year Old (£120.00 at The Whisky Shop), a single malt at 43% ABV stocked by several of the shops we check. Its 100th Anniversary release is a separate bottling at a higher price, so check the label before comparing.

Above that, prices climb steeply: Yamazaki 18 Year Old (£589.00 at Master of Malt), Hakushu 18 Year Japanese Whisky (£549.95 at Hard To Find Whisky) and Hibiki 17 Year Old Japanese Blend (£599.95 at Hard To Find Whisky), with Hibiki 30 Year Old and Hakushu 25 Year Old beyond them. These are price observations, not recommendations, and some of these bottles have only one or two offers among the shops we check, so there is little to compare.

What “Japanese whisky” on a label means

The Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association (JSLMA) has published a voluntary labelling standard that reserves the words “Japanese whisky” for whisky made from malted grain and Japanese water, fermented and distilled in Japan, matured in wooden casks of 700 litres or less in Japan for at least three years, and bottled in Japan at 40% ABV or more. It is an industry code rather than a legal one, and it applies only to the association’s members. Some blends sold as Japanese whisky have included imported whisky, so the label wording matters. If provenance matters to you, check the label and the producer’s own statement rather than the shelf talker.

The same bottle, different shops

Japanese bottles show some of the wider spreads in our catalogue. At our 14 October 2026 check, the gap between the lowest and dearest offer for Yamazaki 12 Year Old was about 15%; for Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve (£74.95 at Master of Malt) it was about 17%, and for Nikka Tailored (£105.00 at Tyndrum Whisky) about 15%. Hibiki Japanese Harmony (£74.95 at Hard To Find Whisky), by contrast, was priced within a narrow band across several shops.

Each bottle page lists every matched offer side by side, including delivery, so the spread for the bottle you want is one click away. Read why whisky prices differ for what drives these gaps in general.

How we chose: check date and coverage

We compared in-stock offers from Abbey Whisky, DrinkSupermarket.com, Hard To Find Whisky, Loch Fyne Whiskies, Milroy’s of Soho, The Whisky Shop, Tyndrum Whisky and Whisky Me in our October 2026 catalogue checks. Loch Fyne Whiskies and The Whisky Shop count as one owner. Prices and stock change; the live table on each bottle page is current, and the retailer’s checkout price is the one that counts. Questions

What styles of Japanese whisky are available in the UK?
The UK market includes Japanese single malts, grain whiskies, and blended whiskies. Major producers such as Suntory (Yamazaki, Hakushu, Hibiki) and Nikka (Yoichi, Miyagikyo, Taketsuru) offer diverse styles ranging from unpeated, delicate floral blends to peated malts. Blended whiskies like Nikka Days and Suntory Toki are common introductory bottlings.
Why is Japanese whisky expensive?
Aged stock is scarce. Japanese whisky sales at home fell from the 1980s in a downturn that lasted about 25 years, so distillers cut production and laid down little whisky, and when demand rose sharply at home and abroad there was too little mature stock. In 2018 Suntory said it would stop selling Hakushu 12 Year Old and Hibiki 17 Year Old because of a shortage of aged whisky. Read more in our guide on why old whisky is expensive and Whiskipedia’s Japanese whisky guide.
Is all "Japanese whisky" made in Japan?
Not necessarily. The Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association (JSLMA) has a voluntary labelling standard that reserves the words for whisky made from malted grain and Japanese water, fermented and distilled in Japan, matured in wooden casks in Japan for at least three years and bottled in Japan at 40% ABV or more. It is an industry code, not a law, and it applies only to the association’s members. Some blends sold as Japanese whisky have included imported whisky.
