How we chose

These are full-size single malts with sherry cask on the label or in the retailer’s description, priced below every Macallan with a live price at the UK retailers we check. We compare cask regime and age, not taste: nobody here claims these taste like Macallan. Where a sherry tag comes from description prose rather than the label, or from a distillery’s usual style, we say so.

What Macallan costs today

Macallan 12 Year Old, the bottle most people mean when they say “Macallan”, had no current price at the retailers we check when we last collected. The bottom of the priced Macallan range was The Macallan 12 Year Old 110 Proof at £119.95 at Master of Malt, a 12-year-old bottled at 55% ABV rather than the standard release. Macallan’s core range matures in sherry-seasoned European and American oak; our reference notes describe the seasoning as oloroso.

The grid lists Macallans with live prices, lowest first; the full range is on the Macallan distillery page.

If you drink Macallan 18

Macallan 18 Year Old Sherry Oak has a live price of currently unavailable. Older alternatives with sherry in their make-up include Glenfarclas 15 Year Old at £72.99 at Master of Malt (46% ABV), Tamdhu 15 Year Old Sherry Cask Matured at £90.95 at The Whisky Barrel (46% ABV, oloroso-matured), and Bunnahabhain 18 Year Old at £120.00 at The Whisky Shop, an unpeated Islay malt matured in ex-sherry casks (46.3% ABV, non-chill-filtered). The same rule applies: a shared cask type, not an identical taste match.

Worth knowing before you buy

Some names that come up often in this conversation are not in our catalogue: Aberlour A’bunadh is one we do not track, so it cannot appear here no matter how often it is recommended elsewhere. Within what we do track, remember that a sherry finish and full sherry maturation are different things; the label or the bottle page says which applies. Gift tins and special packaging change the price without changing the whisky, so compare like with like. And because most of these bottles are stocked by several shops, the delivered price, not the shelf price, is the number to compare.

For the wider choice, the sherry-cask selection and the oloroso page list every bottle with those tags, the best sherry cask whiskies guide covers more budgets, and Speyside groups the region’s distilleries.

Retailers and check date

We compared in-stock offers from Abbey Whisky, DrinkSupermarket.com, Hard To Find Whisky, Loch Fyne Whiskies, Milroy’s of Soho, The Whisky Shop, Tyndrum Whisky and Whisky Me in our October 2026 catalogue checks. Loch Fyne Whiskies and The Whisky Shop count as one owner. Prices and stock change; the live table on each bottle page is current, and the retailer’s checkout price is the one that counts. Questions

Which whiskies are similar to Macallan 12?
A sherry-matured Speyside single malt is the closest by cask. Tamdhu 12 Year Old is matured only in oloroso sherry-seasoned casks, Glenfarclas 12 Year Old is a sherried Speysider from the family-owned Glenfarclas distillery, and GlenDronach 12 Year Old, a Highland malt, is matured in Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry casks.
Is Tamdhu like Macallan?
On paper, partly. Both are Speyside distilleries built around sherry casks: Tamdhu uses first-fill and refill oloroso casks, and Macallan’s core range matures in sherry-seasoned European and American oak.
What does sherry cask mean on a label?
That the whisky was matured, or finished, in a cask that previously held sherry. It does not say which sherry or for how long, and most such casks are seasoned for the whisky trade rather than taken from a bodega. Whiskipedia explains what sherry casks are.
