Scotland's whisky regions explained: the five regions
Scotch whisky's three protected regions and two protected localities, the status of the Islands, and what regional styles can and can't tell you.

Scotch whisky law protects five place names: three regions (Highland, Lowland and Speyside) and two localities (Campbeltown and Islay). A Scotch can use one of those names only if it was distilled there. The names describe where a whisky was made, not how it must taste.
If you have ever picked up a book on Scotch whisky, you were almost certainly introduced to Scotland as a neat patchwork map of flavour. Speyside means orchard fruit and sherry; Islay means medicinal peat smoke; the Lowlands mean light grassy citrus; and Campbeltown means salty coastal funk.
Those descriptions are traditions, not rules. With distilleries using all kinds of cask finishes, peated malt in Speyside and unpeated malt on Islay, geography alone does not tell you what ends up in your glass.
Here is the legal position on Scotland’s whisky regions, what each area is known for, and where the old regional styles break down.
The legal map: 3 protected regions and 2 protected localities
The law does not divide Scotland by flavour. Regulation 10 of the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 sets out the protected names and their boundaries.
Protected regions:
- Highland: Everything north of the Highland line. Regulation 10(7) draws it from the North Channel along the southern shore of the Firth of Clyde to Greenock, then via Cardross, the Campsie Fells, the Wallace Monument and the B998, A91 and M90 roads to the River Earn and the River Tay, ending at the North Sea along the southern shore of the Firth of Tay.
- Lowland: Everything south of that line.
- Speyside: The Moray Council wards of Buckie, Elgin City North, Elgin City South, Fochabers Lhanbryde, Forres, Heldon and Laich, Keith and Cullen, and Speyside Glenlivet, plus the Badenoch and Strathspey ward of Highland Council.
Protected localities:
- Islay: The Isle of Islay in Argyll.
- Campbeltown: The South Kintyre ward of Argyll and Bute Council, around the town of Campbeltown near the tip of the Kintyre peninsula.
Notice what is missing: the Islands. Skye, Orkney, Mull, Jura and Arran are often treated as a sixth region, but “Islands” is not a protected name. All of those islands lie north of the regulation’s Highland line, so Talisker on Skye and Highland Park on Orkney are within the Highland region. Speyside also lies north of the line, which is why the same distillery can sometimes be described as Speyside or Highland.

The 5 regions: styles and well-known names
The styles below are the traditional descriptions each region is known for. They are generalisations, and many distilleries in each area make whisky that does not fit them.
1. Speyside: orchard fruit and sherry casks
- Distillery count: About 50 active distilleries on our distillery map, about a third of the total and the largest concentration in Scotland.
- The landscape: The valley of the River Spey and its tributaries, including the River Livet.
- Style usually described: Green apple, pear, honey and vanilla, with dried fruit and spice in whiskies matured in sherry casks.
- Famous names: Glenfiddich, The Balvenie, The Glenlivet, The Macallan, Aberlour, Glenfarclas.
2. Islay: peat smoke
- Distillery count: About 11 active distilleries on our distillery map.
- The landscape: An Atlantic island in the Inner Hebrides with extensive peat bogs.
- Style usually described: Peat smoke, often medicinal, with seaweed and brine. Not every Islay whisky is peated: Bunnahabhain describes its 12 Year Old as unpeated.
- Famous names: Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Bowmore, Caol Ila, Bruichladdich (including its peated Port Charlotte).
3. The Highlands: a large and varied region
- Distillery count: About 44 active distilleries on the mainland on our distillery map, plus about 15 on the islands, which are within the Highland region in law.
- The landscape: Mountains, moorland and coastal towns, from Perthshire to Caithness, plus the islands.
- Style usually described: Too varied for one profile. Writers often describe floral, honeyed whiskies in the central Highlands, waxy or coastal ones in the north (Clynelish, Old Pulteney) and lightly peated whisky on Orkney (Highland Park).
- Famous names: Glenmorangie, Dalmore, Talisker, Clynelish, Oban, Highland Park.
4. The Lowlands: light and grassy
- Distillery count: About 27 active distilleries on our distillery map, many of them opened in recent years.
- The landscape: Farmland and low hills across southern Scotland, including Edinburgh and Glasgow.
- Style usually described: Light, with grass, citrus and cream. Some Lowland distilleries triple distil: Auchentoshan does so for all of its spirit.
- Famous names: Auchentoshan, Glenkinchie, Bladnoch, Daftmill, Holyrood.
5. Campbeltown: three working distilleries
- Distillery count: 3 active (Springbank, Glen Scotia, Glengyle).
- The landscape: A coastal town near the tip of the Kintyre peninsula. Around thirty distilleries that once operated there are now closed.
- Style usually described: Oily and briny, sometimes with light peat smoke.
- Famous names: Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn (all made at Springbank), Glen Scotia, Kilkerran (made at Glengyle).
Campbeltown was once called the whisky capital of the world, with around thirty distilleries in the Victorian era; by the mid-1930s only Springbank and Glen Scotia were left. When its place as a separate region later looked doubtful, the story often told credits Hedley G. Wright of Springbank’s owner J&A Mitchell with arguing the town’s case and then buying the silent Glengyle distillery, closed since 1925, in 2000. Glengyle returned to production in 2004 as the home of Kilkerran, taking the town back to three working distilleries before the 2009 regulations named Campbeltown a protected locality (Whiskipedia on Glengyle).
Do regions still matter today?
Regional names tell you where a whisky was distilled. They do not fix how it tastes. Cask type, peat level and distillery practice can matter more than location, and they cross regional lines:
- An unpeated malt from Islay: Bunnahabhain 12, which the distillery describes as unpeated and matured in bourbon and sherry casks.
- Peated malt from Speyside: Benromach uses lightly peated malt for all its production, and Benriach makes part of its spirit from peated malt.
- A sherry-cask whisky from the Highlands: GlenDronach 12, matured in Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks.
Regions remain a useful way to learn the map of Scottish distilling, but the label’s cask and peat information tells you more about style.

Use the regional names as a starting point. They tell you where a whisky was distilled, and the traditional styles give a rough guide: Speyside for fruit and sherry casks, Islay for peat, the Lowlands for lighter whisky. Then check the cask and peat details, because plenty of good whiskies sit outside their region’s stereotype.
