Why whisky prices differ between UK shops

The same bottle of whisky often costs around 10% more at one UK retailer than another. What drives the gap, and what to check before buying.

Of the 199 bottles sold by two or more of the retailers in our 14 October 2026 catalogue check, the dearest offer was typically 9.6% above the lowest, and for 48 bottles the gap was 20% or more. Shops price differently, and delivery can change which one works out cheaper. Here is why, with the data.

This guide links to retailers. Some links may earn us a commission; picks are based on the price data and the criteria below.

How we measured

We compared in-stock shelf prices for the same confirmed bottle in our 14 October 2026 catalogue check, which covered 5 UK retailers: 455 priced bottles, of which 199 were sold by two or more retailers and 186 by two or more independently owned ones. Loch Fyne Whiskies and The Whisky Shop share an owner, so we count them as one retailer. Delivery was worked out separately, as one bottle sent to a UK mainland address on each shop’s standard service.

What drives the difference

Shops set their own margins and run their own promotions, and they update prices at different times, so the same bottle can sit at different prices for ordinary commercial reasons. Buying volumes, overheads and how quickly stock sells all feed into the price a shop chooses. We do not know any individual retailer’s reasoning, and nothing here should be read as a criticism of any shop: a higher shelf price can come with faster delivery, better stock depth or service you value.

Is it really the same bottle?

A lower price is only a saving if the bottle is the same bottle. Editions, strengths, sizes and gift packs can all share a name: a 35cl is not the 70cl, and an anniversary release is not the standard bottling. We only compare listings confirmed to be the same bottling, matched on distillery, age, edition, strength and size. Before treating one shop as cheaper, check the size and ABV on the listing.

Delivery can change the lowest-priced shop

At the seven shops whose delivery policies we reviewed on 23 October 2026, a single bottle cost £4.50 to £5.99 to send on a standard UK mainland service, with free delivery over £99, or over £100 at Abbey Whisky, Hard To Find Whisky and Milroy’s of Soho. For 9 bottles at our October check, the shop with the lowest shelf price was not the shop with the lowest one-bottle delivered total.

One example: Dalmore 12 Year Old (£59.00 at Loch Fyne Whiskies) had its lowest shelf price at Loch Fyne Whiskies, but the lowest delivered total for a single bottle was at Tyndrum Whisky. Every bottle page shows both figures, so the comparison includes the delivery assumption and its date.

Tax sets a floor

However cheap a bottle gets, a fixed share is tax. Duty on spirits over 22% ABV is £33.99 per litre of pure alcohol from 1 February 2026: that is £9.51 on a 70cl bottle at 40% ABV and £10.94 at 46%, with 20% VAT then applied to the total including duty (source: gov.uk alcohol duty rates). The tax is the same whichever shop you use, so the differences you see between shops come from their pricing, not the Treasury’s.

Shops that share an owner

Loch Fyne Whiskies and The Whisky Shop have the same owner. At our check, 157 bottles were listed by both, and 142 of those were at an identical price. We count them as one retailer when we say how many shops sell a bottle, and you should too when comparing: it is one comparison, not two.

Putting it to use

For the method behind every figure here, read how we compare prices. To compare live prices, browse all bottles or a band such as £30–£50; every bottle page shows each matched offer with its retailer, check time and delivery status.

How we chose: check date and coverage

The figures above come from our 14 October 2026 catalogue check, which covered DrinkSupermarket.com, Hard To Find Whisky, Loch Fyne Whiskies, The Whisky Shop and Tyndrum Whisky; the live price tables also cover Abbey Whisky, Milroy’s of Soho and Whisky Me. Delivery policies were reviewed on 23 October 2026 across seven retailers. Loch Fyne Whiskies and The Whisky Shop count as one owner. Prices move daily; the live table on each bottle page is current, and the retailer’s checkout price is the one that counts.

Questions

How much of a bottle's price is tax?
Duty on spirits over 22% ABV is £33.99 per litre of pure alcohol from 1 February 2026, so £9.51 on a 70cl bottle at 40% ABV or £10.94 at 46%, then 20% VAT on the total including duty. Source: gov.uk alcohol duty rates.
