Scotch whisky regions

Scotch whisky law recognises five regions: Highland, Lowland, Speyside, Islay and Campbeltown. The Islands are legally part of the Highlands but are usually treated as a region of their own, because their malts share a coastal character. Each region has a house style shaped by its water, barley, peat and weather, though plenty of distilleries break the pattern.
