Campbeltown whisky

Campbeltown, at the southern end of the Kintyre peninsula, has three working distilleries: Springbank, Glen Scotia and Glengyle, which bottles its single malt as Kilkerran. Springbank makes three styles at one site: lightly peated Springbank, heavily peated Longrow and unpeated, triple-distilled Hazelburn.

Campbeltown is a protected locality under the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009, alongside Islay. Springbank and Kilkerran bottles are often out of stock at the retailers we check, so the list below can be short: it shows only bottles with a current in-stock offer. You may also see blended malts such as The Gauldrons, which marry Campbeltown single malts from more than one distillery.

How many distilleries are in Campbeltown?
As of 2026, three are working: Springbank, Glen Scotia and Glengyle, which makes Kilkerran. The town once had more than 30 malt distilleries and was known as the whisky capital of the world. Campbeltown is still protected as a whisky locality in its own right, despite being Scotland’s smallest.
Why did Campbeltown lose most of its distilleries?
Most closed in the slump of the 1920s, when sales collapsed after the First World War and during US Prohibition. The group formed in 1919 to keep several of the town’s distilleries going went bankrupt in 1924, and Glengyle and Hazelburn both closed in 1925. Only Springbank and Glen Scotia came through.
Why is Glengyle's whisky called Kilkerran?
Because the Glengyle brand name had already been sold to the owners of Glen Scotia. The Mitchell family, who own Springbank, bought the silent site in 2000 and reopened it in 2004, the first new distillery in Campbeltown for 125 years. They named the whisky Kilkerran, from Cille Chiarain, the old Gaelic name for Campbeltown, and the first bottling came out in 2009.
What are Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn?
They are three single malts made at the same distillery, Springbank. Springbank is lightly peated and distilled two and a half times. Longrow is heavily peated and double distilled. Hazelburn is unpeated and triple distilled. All of Springbank’s barley is malted on site.
