Lowland whisky

The Lowlands are the Scotch region south of the Highland line, protected under the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009. Lowland malts are traditionally light and unpeated, and Auchentoshan still triple-distils. The bottles below come from Auchentoshan, Glenkinchie, Bladnoch and the region’s newer names.

Most Lowland distilleries are new: Kingsbarns (2014), Lindores Abbey (2017) and Lochlea (2018) all began distilling this century, alongside Glasgow’s 1770 range. Not everything here is unpeated: 1770 Glasgow Peated and Lochlea Smoke Without Fire are peated releases. The region’s grain distilleries mostly supply blends; their bottled single grains sit on our grain whisky page.

Questions

What is the cheapest Lowland whisky?
The cheapest Lowland whisky is Auchentoshan 12 Year Old (12 years old, 40% ABV, 70cl), at £29.95 from Hard To Find Whisky. That is £35.90 delivered to the UK mainland for one bottle. Next cheapest: Auchentoshan American Oak Single Malt Whisky (£31.50) and The Epicurean Blended Malt (£34.90).
How much does Lowland whisky cost?
Lowland whisky costs from £29.95 to £3,499.95, with a median of £67.50 for a full-size bottle. The dearest is Rosebank (silent) Release #1 Single Malt Scotch 1990 30 year old Whisky.
What is the oldest Lowland whisky you can buy?
Is Lowland whisky triple distilled?
Traditionally, yes, but most Lowland malt is now double distilled. Auchentoshan is the long-standing fully triple-distilled single malt, and the revived Rosebank has brought back triple distillation. Triple distillation gives a lighter spirit at a higher strength, often around 80% ABV off the still.
What happened to Rosebank?
Rosebank in Falkirk was mothballed by United Distillers in 1993, and its stills were stolen from the empty site in 2008-09. Ian Macleod Distillers bought the site and the brand in 2017, rebuilt it with triple distillation and worm tubs, and filled its first new cask in July 2023.
Which grain distilleries are in the Lowlands?
The working ones include Cameronbridge, Girvan, North British and Strathclyde. Cameronbridge, founded in 1824, makes grain whisky for Diageo blends such as Johnnie Walker, and Girvan, built in 1963, makes it for William Grant & Sons. Their output mostly goes into blends rather than single grain bottlings.
Are Lowland whiskies always unpeated?
No. Most are, but several newer Lowland distilleries make peated whisky, including 1770 Glasgow Peated and Lochlea Smoke Without Fire. Auchentoshan, Glenkinchie and Bladnoch built the region’s light, unpeated reputation, but the region says where a whisky was distilled, not how it tastes.
