Questions
What is the cheapest corn whiskey?
The cheapest corn whiskey is Mellow Corn (50% ABV, 70cl), at £29.50 from Master of Malt. That is £34.45 delivered to the UK mainland for one bottle.
What is corn whiskey?
A US whiskey made from a mash of at least 80% corn and distilled at no more than 160 proof. It must be bottled at 40% ABV or more and may contain colouring or flavouring unless it is labelled “straight”.
What is the difference between corn whiskey and bourbon?
Corn whiskey needs at least 80% corn, bourbon only 51%. The barrels differ too: bourbon must go into charred new oak, while corn whiskey, if it is aged, must use used or uncharred new oak. A high-corn spirit aged in charred new oak would be a bourbon.
Does corn whiskey have to be aged?
No. Storage in oak is only required if the label claims an age; if it is stored, it must go in at no more than 125 proof. Straight corn whiskey must spend at least 2 years in used or uncharred new oak. Unaged American whiskey is often called white dog.
