On the banks of the River Lossie, on the western edge of the city of Elgin, we find the distillery of Glen Moray. Even today you have the impression to stand on an old Scottish farm. And it was, after all, an estate where beer was first brewed. In the shadow of Gallow Hill, the hill where executions took place until the end of the 17th century, whiskey was distilled from 1897 onwards. Glen Moray was also the first distillery to use a so-called wood finish. Long before Glenmorangie started to use sherry and port barrels, Glen Moray had Chennonnay (Chenin Blanc) barrels downstream. This finish makes Glen Moray whiskeys particularly soft and mild, and very popular with starters. However, one has to say that Glen Moray whiskeys are still underestimated. The Glen Moray 12 Years impresses with its fruity freshness and has an almost unbeatable price-performance ratio. 90/100 points in Jim Murray’s Whiskey Bible 2011 Glen Moray 12 Year Old is a 12 year old single malt whisky from the Glen Moray whisky distillery (located in the Speyside region). Rated an average of 3.8 out of 5 by 75 reviewers and available from Loch Fyne for only £33.95, with reviews like that this is one single malt whisky you can’t afford to miss
