Whiskies of America

The whiskey with the E! Mostly… America produces a wide range of whiskies but is perhaps best known for bourbon and Rye whiskey. Bourbon by definition must contain at least 51% corn in its mash bill, the same rule applies for other varieties, 51% Rye for Rye, 51% wheat for wheat etc. There are 6 standards types:

  • Rye Whiskey
  • Rye Malt Whiskey
  • Malt Whiskey
  • Wheat Whiskey
  • Bourbon Whiskey
  • Corn Whiskey

Though other grains (such as millet) are occasionally used as well by more experimental distilleries. Whiskey from America is a very interesting area in no small part to their legislation around barrelling and finishing.

Some American whiskies such as bourbon for example are restricted to only using a cask once, meaning that younger whiskies mature far faster, aided by a higher angels share. Infuriating this also means far fewer old bourbons and a more limited range on the palette.

On the other hand lack of restriction on areas other than bourbon makes their booming single malt scene. Regardless of where you go expect above average quality but very few age statements.
